Fascia envelopes every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein within the body together with all the internal organs including the heart, lungs, spinal cord and brain. It is one continuous structure and is connected to every part of the body – similar to a spiders web.
In a relaxed state, fascia is wavy and able to stretch and move without any restriction. However, when trauma occurs such as a fall, bruising, muscle strain or inflammation, the pliability reduces, it becomes tight and restricted and pain receptors are activated.
Myofascial release is a technique used to help increase the pliability of the fascia and promote healing by restoring function. It helps improve range of movement of the tissues and reduces pain by increasing viscous flow and piezoelectricity.
